Fir Tree Class Year 1
Hello and welcome, Fir tree class is one of two classes in Year 1. Taught by Mr Harrison and Ms Dooley, and supported by Mrs McGuiness, we are currently a class of 29 smiley and imaginative little 5 and 6 year olds.
Transitioning from YR to Y1 can be difficult so we seek guidance in our School Values - kindness, honesty, working hard and a
love of learning - for a smooth journey.
Our Learning Commitments for the Autumn term are:
~ In reading, sound and blend, and find and retrieve information from the text.
~ In writing, think of and say a sentence. Write simple sentences in a series.
~ In maths, to know number facts to 10 and be able to count to 100.
In year 1 we cover a full range of subjects arranged over a two week period. Core subjects such as English, Maths and Science are taught every week. Whereas History, Geography, ICT, Music, RE, Art, Design Technology and French are taught in rotation.
PE is taught every week and children should have their kit at school from Monday to Friday as depending on the gym timetable PE slots maybe changed to a different day.
This term in History the children have been exploring why we celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. In Geography children have mapped their walk to school and examined features of their local area. In Art children have been looking at the work of Henri Rousseau producing jungle paintings in his style. While in Music we have been learning to use our voices expressively as well as learning french songs. Children have enjoyed exploring the human body and its senses in Science. They used each sense observing how our senses could be tricked and how they work together. Such as drinking green orange juice, tasting lime and finding it difficult to locate a sound with their eyes closed!
