The Guardian Trip

To follow on from our visit from Gary Younge to Moss Bury at the end of 2019, some very lucky year 6's were invited to visit the Guardian Headquarters in London!

We were  extremely lucky to get some funding from Simon Speller, the Mayor of Stevenage, who funded the train fare and the children’s lunch from his local community budget.

We got to London and Gary Younge met us from the train.  There was no queue at Platform 9 3/4 so we had a quick photo there and then Gary walked us to the Guardian offices.  They had our names on reception, we were given a visitors badge and taken up to the second floor. Gary then explained about the morning and what we would see and hear, we were so excited! We attended the 10am meeting where the deputy editor spoke to all of the reporters about yesterdays paper and which stories had been read the most. Then they all spoke about the news and current affairs and which news items they had been researching.  After that Gary took us on a tour of the Guardian and told us a little bit about how they all worked and which parts of the paper they were responsible for.  We met the lady who had made the podcast of Gary’s visit to Moss Bury and we saw the rooms that the podcasts are made in.  People were so friendly and said thank you to us for letting the Guardian visit our school!  After we had finished the tour, Gary answered all of our questions and we left to explore.

We had some lunch in Prezzo, thank you Simon, it was delicious!

Then we made our way to the British Library where we were able to see so many books! We visited an exhibition called ‘Treasures’ and there was so many interesting things for us to see. We were able to see Captain Scott’s diary of his expedition to the South Pole, musical scores by Handel, Mozart, Bach, the earliest surviving printed version of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the Magna Carta which was dated 15 June 1215. We were so lucky to see so many important treasures.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Gary Younge who arranged for us to visit and who has promised to visit us again, we are so lucky!  And to Simon Speller who supported us with the funding.
